In 1899, the San Francisco Call, a newspaper that served the Bay Area between 1890 and 1913, reported some unusual winter news in Marin:
“Snow fell for over two hours yesterday throughout a large part of Marin County and in some spots the fall was an inch in depth.”
Though snow isn’t likely on the forecast in 2016, Marin County has some exciting offerings slated for the upcoming holiday season. In true Marin fashion, family-friendly events showcase this region’s dedication to the arts—highlighting performance, dance and musical talent that rivals any large city.
So ditch the crowds this Christmas and head to Marin County for great holiday-themed entertainment. Check out some of our favorite events below.
Photos With Santa at Town Center Corte Madera
From now till Christmas Eve, kids can get up close and personal with Old St. Nick at Town Center in Corte Madera. Children of all ages will enjoy free photos with Santa. Sure, Santa’s not wearing tap shoes or playing the harp, but he’s performing an important role in the hearts of young children, and for that, we thank him.
Plus, who doesn’t love holiday shopping at this gorgeous outdoor mall? You can check your list twice here and support Hospice by the Bay volunteers who are generously providing free gift-wrapping for mall patrons.
Now, back to the arts!
Marin Ballet Presents ‘The Nutcracker’
If you’ve never seen The Nutcracker during the holidays, stop what you’re doing and buy tickets to this enchanting event.
Follow Clara through a world of wonder decorated in fanciful Victorian costume, and delight in the familiar melodies of Tchaikovsky’s most memorable work.
Enjoy photo opportunities with the cast in costume before and after the show. Don’t wait to scoop up tickets. The Marin Ballet performs this December for one weekend only (Dec. 10 and 11) at the Marin Center in San Rafael.
Marin Theatre Company Presents ‘Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley’
Looking for some unexpected holiday entertainment? How about Marin Theatre Company’s production of Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley? This Jane Austen–inspired performance is a charming holiday romance starring the lesser-known Bennet sister, Mary, with appearances from clever Jane and handsome Elizabeth.
Austen’s keen wit and hilarious social observations are evident throughout and set in the perfect holiday theme.
Matinee and evening performances are available at the Marin Theatre in Mill Valley. Gather your friends and family because group discounts are available, too.
Charles Dickens Family Victorian Holiday Party at Falkirk Cultural Center
Another classic author enjoying attention in Marin this December is Charles Dickens, author of the classic holiday tale A Christmas Carol.
Join Dickens and his family for an entertaining, Victorian-themed affair at the Falkirk Mansion in San Rafael. Travel back in time as you listen to book readings, play parlor games, build crafts, and dance the night away with friends and family.
Light food and refreshments will be available, and feel free to wear your best Victorian costume! Admission for children is only $9; adult admission is $12.
Marin Symphony Holiday Choral Concerts by Candlelight and Pops Concert
This annual holiday celebration is located at the Church of St. Raphael in downtown San Rafael. Light a candle and sing along on Dec. 3 and 4 to usher in the season.
Speaking of the Marin Symphony, don’t miss their ever-popular Holiday Pops Concert on Dec. 13 at the Marin Veterans' Memorial Auditorium. Enjoy holiday carols, scores from holiday-themed cinema, and other classic works performed by the symphony, the Marin Symphony Chorus and the Marin Symphony Children's Chorus. Tickets are reserved seating, so be sure to buy your tickets in advance.
Don’t fret if you don’t experience snow this holiday season; after all, that’s what living in California is all about! But do take time to enjoy special seasonal performances featuring the talented people who make Marin County a steadfast hub for the arts.
