Sausalito
Sausalito is a city in southern Marin at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge across the straight from San Francisco. It’s known for its Richardson Bay houseboat enclaves, built by artist squatters after WWII. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Bay Model Visitor Center has a functioning 3D hydraulic model of the Bay Area, plus exhibits about the area's waterways. SF Bay Adventures & Schooner Freda B as well as Call of the Sea's Brigantine Matthew Turner also departs from Sausalito for an exciting sail day on the bay!
For visitor information and maps on the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Headlands stop by the Marin Headlands Visitor Center at Fort Barry in Sausalito. Within Marin Headlands, is also home to Point Bonita YMCA, offering outdoor education and wellness retreats for all ages. And to feel like you are walking on water, don't forget to check out Point Bonita Lighthouse, which has an intesting history and is still active today.
