Located in the middle of San Francisco Bay, less than 20 minutes from Tiburon, Angel Island State Park offers spectacular views of the San Francisco skyline, the Marin Headlands and Mount Tamalpais. The island is also alive with history spanning from Native American's to current day. Come discover the island for yourself!
As the largest natural island in San Francisco Bay (approx. 740 acres), this California State Park known is known as the "Ellis Island of the West". Operating from 1910 to 1940, its immigration station processed hundreds of thousands, primarily detaining Chinese immigrants under the Exclusion Act. It also has a rich history as a Miwok hunting site, Civil War camp, and WWII POW detention center.
Visiting Information:
Today, the Angel Island Immigration Station is a National Historic Landmark and part of a California state park, offering tours of the restored detention barracks and a museum to educate visitors on this pivotal, often painful, chapter of American history.
