The Outdoors

Outdoor Adventures in San Rafael

Marin County is a paradise for outdoor recreation - with weather that allows visitors and residents to enjoy mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, and sailing all year round. But it's also a wonderful place to do next to nothing at all.

Marin County’s lands represent outstanding examples of Northern California environments including oak-bay woodlands, savannas, grasslands and salt marshes.  These habitats are managed and protected to enhance their natural, undeveloped character while accommodating educational activities and trail-oriented uses.  Outdoor recreation – hiking, running, mountain biking, horseback riding, and all manner of water sports including sail boarding, surfing, fishing, boating, kayaking, and canoeing – is what Marin County is all about.  Additionally, seasonal phenomena like the migration of whales, bird watching, garden tours, and wildlife and scenic painting and photography are unique features of Marin.  Aside from the natural side, there is also baseball, golf, and the raceway.

101 Surf Sports is a full service Water Sports Sporting Goods Shop specializing in Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP), Prone Paddleboarding, Windsurfing, Kiteboarding, Surfing, Foiling, Wingsurfing, and Kayaking.

Take a hike, a bike ride or even do some fishing at China Camp State Park.

Drop a line for fishing, swim or bring your own kayak or canoe and enjoy the bay at McNears Beach Park.

Open space preserves and parks and and pathways are scattered throughout San Rafael.  Six open space preserves including Loma Alta, Lucas Valley, San Pedro Mountain, Santa Margarita Island, Santa Venetia Marsh and Terra Linda Sleepy Hollow Preserves.  Six parks and parks and pathways are additional outdoor options to take in the beauty of the area, including Adrian Rosal Park, Bayside Park, Buck's Landing, Lagoon Park across from Civic Center, Lucas Valley Park, McInnis Park and McInnis Skate Park.

Midweek excursions in the late Fall through early Spring seasons offer some of the most advantageous opportunities to enjoy Marin’s great outdoors.  While doing so, please be respectful of our environmental treasures.  Contact various park services to help you tread lightly or learn from our Cleaner California Coast partnership on how to be better stewards of the place we call home.
