Join us at O'Hanlon Center for the Arts for Stab Sewn Books with Derek Bacchus! The Stab-Sewn book is a structure developed by the Chinese, Korean, and Japanese cultures during the 14th–17th centuries CE, using their soft but strong long-fiber sheets of paper, and incorporating a folded leading foredge to each sheet. In the morning we will review handmade books that illustrate the differences in these three traditions, and then make demo versions in four of these styles to learn and practice their sewing patterns.
In the afternoon we will follow by making two books — the Japanese 4-hole structure (Yotsume Toji), and the Chinese 6-hole structure (Kangxi) — with a higher level of materials (handmade lokta papers for the covers, mulberry kozo for the text paper) and additional techniques for an inner binding (nakatoji) and finished corners (kadogire). You will leave with your own illustrated step-by-step instructions so you can confidently maneuver your next versions at home.
Price: $120, $96 OHCA Members, $25 materials fee
