'Tis the Season for Music and Merriment in Marin

Known as the “sunny side of the Golden Gate Bridge,” Marin County is truly a destination for all seasons. And for the holidays, Marin is ho-ho-hosting festivities that’ll bring you plenty of music and merriment, ranging from concerts to a comedic catechism.

Here are six hand-picked Marin events that are sure to lift your holiday spirits.

Dickens’ Family Victorian Holiday Party

6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7

Falkirk Cultural Center

Step into a time machine and head back to Victorian England during the Dickens’ Family Victorian Holiday Party at the Falkirk Cultural Center in San Rafael. Visitors will be treated to readings by Charles Dickens and will see his characters — including Ebenezer Scrooge — spring to life. They’ll also be able to meet Father Christmas, play Victorian parlor games, dance, sing and make holiday crafts. Tickets are $9 for children and $12 for adults.

Marin Ballet: “Nutcracker”

1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 and Sunday, Dec. 9

‘Tis the season for some whimsy and old-fashioned grandeur. Why not treat you and your loved ones to the magic of ballet? Delight in clever storytelling, heroic characters, and lavish costumes and sets while experiencing the breathtaking choreography on stage. Tickets are $25 for youth and seniors and $45 for adults. In addition, immediately after each 1 p.m. performance, audience members have the thrilling opportunity to meet costumed characters at the Candy Cane Party for only $10.

Kitka Women’s Vocal Ensemble: “Wintersongs”

5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9

Journey through the magic of Eastern Europe with Kitka, an Oakland-based women’s vocal ensemble that uses only the pure unaccompanied voice to create rich and dynamic landscapes of sound. This wildly popular holiday program will showcase music from a variety of Eastern European ethnic and spiritual traditions, infusing audiences with warmth, hope, and cheer — just what the soul needs on a dark winter night. Tickets range from $10 to $35.

Marin Symphony Holiday Pops Concert

Tuesday, Dec. 11

Marin Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium

A seasonal Marin classic, the Marin Symphony Holiday Pops Concert will be hopping with holiday pop classics, traditional carols and favorite theme songs. Special guests, sing-alongs and complimentary post-concert treats will tie a bow on the program held at the Marin Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium in San Rafael. Tickets range from $20 to $85.

“Sister’s Christmas Catechism”

5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14 and Saturday, Dec. 15

Marin Center Showcase Theater

You’ll be chuckling like Santa during the Marin Center Showcase Theater’s production of “Sister’s Christmas Catechism.” Shows will be staged four times at the San Rafael venue. This holiday mystery extravaganza, from the author of “Late Nite Catechism,” follows Sister as she hilariously retraces the story of the nativity. She’ll be aided in her quest for the Magi by a local choir and audience members. Tickets are $60.

Singers Marin’s “’Tis the Season…Sing Joy!”

4-6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16

Marin Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium

Singers Marin will warm up the Marin Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium in San Rafael with songs of Christmas, Hanukkah and peace during their “’Tis the Season … Sing Joy!” concert. Members of seven youth and adult choral ensembles will perform.Tickets cost $25 to $40. Students get a half-price discount.
