As the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson once said, summer means happy times and having fun. And you’ve got to admit that the Beach Boys are summertime experts.

So when you’re hunting for fun this summer in Marin County, you don’t have to look far – especially if you’re in search of entertainment outdoors.

For your summertime pleasure, we’ve rounded up five outdoor events in Marin that appeal to pretty much anyone – concert-goers, movie fans, theater lovers and even car enthusiasts.

Corte Madera Summer Sunday Concert Series

Sundays, June 10 to Aug. 26

There’s nothing quite like chilling out on a lazy Sunday evening in the summer and catching a concert in the great outdoors. Especially if the shows are free!

Every year, the Corte Madera Community Foundation presents the Corte Madera Summer Sunday Concert Series at Piccolo Pavilion in Old Corte Madera Square.

The 2018 concerts – featuring a melodious mix of R&B, soul, rock, West Coast blues, funk and Americana – run from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. every Sunday through Aug. 26. And you don’t have to pay a penny to take in the tunes.

Kanbar Performing Arts Center’s Summer Nights Outdoor Music Festival

Saturdays, July 7 to Aug. 4

Music lovers gather each summer at the Osher Marin JCC in San Rafael to enjoy plenty of ear candy. And there’s a variety to be sampled at the Summer Nights Outdoor Music Festival.

Concerts will feature a set of sounds from the Afro-Cuban, Hawaiian, jazz, American folk-pop or Latin big band genres.

And concert-goers can do more than sit back and listen. At the July 7 and Aug. 4 concerts, for example, a portable dance floor will be set up and a pre-concert salsa class will be offered. On July 14, there’ll be a pre-show hula performance.

Each concert starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults; kids 17 and under are admitted at no charge. Parking is free. To entertain the kids, there’ll be an on-site playground and even art activities.

By the way, if you get hungry or thirsty, dinner fare, snacks, coffee, tea, soda, beer, wine and cocktails will be available for purchase. Or you can bring your own picnic basket overflowing with goodies.

Movies in the Park

July 6, Aug. 3, Sept. 7 and Oct. 5

Forget the movie theater! The first Friday of the month through Oct. 5, the Mill Valley Recreation Department is screening family-friendly classics at Old Mill Park. Spoiler alert: Admission is free!

Here’s the lineup:

July 6: Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Aug. 3: The Incredibles

Sept. 7: The Lion King

Oct. 5: Zootopia

Movies start at sunset. Organizers encourage you to equip yourself with blankets, low-rise beach chairs, flashlights and picnic fare so you can fully enjoy the Hollywood magic. Oh, and if you know you’re going to be craving buttered popcorn, be sure to bring your own.

Performance times are 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Under the Oak Tree, Northgate Mall is located at 5800 Northgate Mall in San Rafael. Admission is free!

Nostalgia Days Cruise + Car Show

Friday and Saturday, Aug. 3 and 4

Grant Avenue in downtown Novato really revs up every August. That’s when the Nostalgia Days Cruise + Car Show takes place.

The Friday-night cruise allows drivers of hot rods to show off their prized possessions. The seven-block-long show on Saturday enables car aficionados to get a close-up look at hundreds of pampered and polished classics, hot rods, motorcycles, trucks and other vehicles.

This year, the car cruise hits the road at 6 p.m. Aug. 3. The following day, the car show gets into gear at 10 a.m. and lasts till 4 p.m. Both events are organized by the Downtown Novato Business Association. Admission is free.

Aside from the main event Saturday, DJs will be spinning tunes, bands will be pumping out rock music, and beer and mixed drinks will be served.
