We hope you’ve bought your Halloween costume, because it’s almost time to trick-or-treat! Marin County has many fun happenings around Halloween time, from live entertainment and colorful parades to themed farm and pumpkin patches. Whether you’re in town for Halloween or all of October, here are six ways to celebrate the spooky season.
Bay Area Discovery Museum's Goblin Jamboree
Get ready for ghouls, ghosts and goblins! During the weekend of Oct. 21-22, the Bay Area Discovery Museum is hosting its very own Halloween celebration. This year, there’s a witches and wizards theme, but you can dress as whomever (or whatever) you like. There are all sorts of activities taking place, from pony rides and bounce houses to face painting and glow-in-the-dark trains. If you’re eager to up your creative game, take part in one of the crafts programs, such as Wand Design or the Potion Laboratory.
Novato's Halloween Scream on the Green
This year marks the fourth annual Scream on the Green weekend event in Novato, kicking off on Friday, Oct. 27 at 5:30 in the evening. The event runs in conjunction with the Downtown Novato Business Association’s Safe Trick or Treat, so there are many spooky surprises in store! Wander down the Chamber of Horrors, or kick back and relax to live music and other entertainment. Of course, there are also artisan booths, as well as a children’s play area for younger kids.
Fairfax Halloween Parade
Halloween is all about costumes, so why not show yours off at this year’s Fairfax parade?
The starting point is the Fairfax Theatre on Broadway at 4:30 p.m., and then the crowd weaves down Broadway to Bolinas and on to the haunted grove in Bolinas Park. There are prizes for the best costumes—best family costume, best boy’s costume, best girl’s costume and most creative costume—which will be announced around 6 p.m. Winner or no winner, there will be treats for all!
HopMonk Tavern Rock Candy Halloween Party
Ready to rock out this Halloween? If you’ve never heard Rock Candy live, now’s your chance! The five-piece group is known for its renditions of rock classics from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s—think AC/DC, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard and more. Tickets for HopMonk Tavern’s special Halloween performance are on sale now; doors open at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27. Costumes aren’t required but are definitely a fun way to get in the festive spirit.
Halloween Family Farm Day at Slide Ranch
For families spending Halloween in Marin County, Slide Ranch is the perfect setting for a carefree day in the sun. As part of Halloween Family Farm Day on Saturday, Oct. 28, families will partake in a number of activities, ranging from costume making (from recycled materials) and face painting to spooky tours of the Slide Ranch garden to cooking classes. Costumes aren’t necessary but are definitely encouraged. You can even practice trick-or-treating around the ranch.
Shopping Center Events
If you can’t quite commit to the events featured above, consider taking part in one of Marin County’s many shopping center events. There is trick-or-treating at Northgate Mall, where store clerks will hand out candy from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., as well as a pumpkin patch at the Marin Country Mart in Larkspur. The patch is open in October seven days a week, and organic pumpkins come from Fresh Run Farm in Bolinas. The big pumpkins are great for carving jack-o-lanterns, while the Cinderella ones are yummy to eat.
